In collaboration with the prestigious Talavera Ceramic Center, we created an illustration for a ceramic piece in the shape of a skull, and traveled to Talavera to paint it with a reed pen and brush, using the same traditional ceramic painting techniques and colors from the 16th century.

The Talavera Calavera experience is conceived as a field trip to acquire new knowledge and inspiration. The trip is planned in three parts: first, theoretical sessions on the symbolism of the skull are held at Elisava, led by Mery Cuesta.

Subsequently, participants work with the project tutor, Jordi Ros, in several sessions on the concept and design that will be developed on a skull-shaped piece at the Ceramic Center. These sessions have a strong emphasis on reflecting on symbolism.

Finally, we travel to the Talavera Ceramic Center in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), where each student creates their illustration on a ceramic skull piece. In this workshop, students are given the tools to translate their design onto the skull, taking into account the unique ceramic techniques of this important city. The ceramics of Talavera de la Reina were declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2019.
